Diabetic Neuropathy a Real Nerve Killer! Can Something Be Done?

Diabetic neuropathy is a disorder that is caused by injury to small blood vessels that supply the nerves.

Symptoms may include:

  • Numbness and tingling of extremities

  • Dysesthesia (abnormal sensation to a body part)

  • Diarrhea

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Urinary incontinence (loss of bladder control)

  • Facial, mouth and eyelid drooping

  • Vision changes

  • Dizziness

  • Muscle weakness

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Speech impairment

  • Fasciculation (muscle contractions)

  • Anorgasmia ( the inability to reach an orgasm).

  • Loss of balance and coordination may also occur.  

Duration of the disease, age, cigarette smoking, hypertension, height and hyperlipidemia are also risk factors.

Tight glucose control may help neuropathy.

Tireatment of early manifestations involves improving glycemic control. Tight control of blood glucose may reverse the changes but only if the disease is recent in onset.
