Diabetes and Apple Cider Vinegar - Stopping the Sugar Spikes!

Diabetes and apple cider (ACV) is a subject that I should  have written way about before now. I have known about and have used apple cider vinegar for years and for various reasons.

I have also known of it's effects of apple cider vinegar on diabetes for as long as I have had the disease. After some time though I got away from using it (i can't remember why). 

Some one brought up the subject of diabetes and apple cider vinegar and that is what encouraged me to get back on it and also to write about it.

Apple cider vinegar has been used as a home remedy for ages. I'm talking about since the middle ages. As one story gone: around the 14th or 15th century thieves were known to...

...drink a apple cider vinegar solution to ward off the black plague when robbing the sick or the dead who were afflicted with the plague. This supposedly shielded them from the disease. 

Besides diabetes - there are many other benefits to using Apple Cider Vinegar. Some of the which are:

  • the relief of allergies

  • controlling high cholesterol

  • clearing soar throats and sinuses.

  • boosting the immune system

  • increasing stamina

  • weight loss

  • controlling blood sugars

  • helping digestion

  • urinary tract infections

  • bad breath

  • high blood pressure, and much, much more.

Unlike many medicines, there are no serious adverse side effects of using apple cider vinegar. (Long term high dosage of any acetic acid may lower potassium and reduce bone density).

It should not be surprising that apple cider vinegar is an affective product, all we have to do is look at what it's made from: Apples

We know that apples are full  of vitamins,minerals,antioxidants and fiber. Thus the old saying: "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". 

Apple cider vinegar has even more beneficial ingredients. It is loaded with many of the minerals and trace elements that our bodies need. This is especially so in the case of diabetics! Here are just a few:

  • potassium

  • calcium

  • magnesium

  • phosphorous

  • chlorine

  • sodium

  • copper

  • iron

  • silicon

  • fluoride and more!

 But how does apple cider vinegar help diabetes?

The claim is that apple cider vinegar slows the rate of carbohydrate absorption which reduces those dreaded sugar spikes some 25 to 50%.  (those with diabetes want to avoid these spikes as much as possible)

The active ingredient in apple cider vinegar is acetic acid. It is this ingredient that inhibits the activity of some carbohydrate digesting enzymes.

So when apple cider vinegar is present in the stomach, certain sugars and starches pass through the system without being digested which of course has less impact on rising blood sugars.

Of course every person who has diabetes is different and some diabetics may not have the same results. Ph. D Carol Johnston head of the nutrition department at Arizona State University, in her studies, concluded that...

...taking 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar along with an ounce of cheese before bedtime led to a decrease in fasting blood sugar levels.

One who has diabetes can mix a couple of teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in about a 1/2 cup of water before meals and about 30 minutes after.

Another good way to add it to your diet is by sprinkling it over foods or salads, perhaps in a vinaigrette. 

If you decide to use the apple cider vinegar regimen for diabetes, make sure that you keep close watch of your blood sugars. And as always keep your Doctor informed as to what you are doing.

Honey, Garlic, and Apple Cider Vinegar

Vinegar is beneficial for many situations concerning health and not just for diabetes. In my searches on the "diabetes and apple cider vinegar" subject, I found a book that shows 129 ways that Honey, Garlic and Vinegar can be used.

Some of these included:

  • of course diabetes

  • high blood pressure

  • fatigue

  • infections

  • joint pain etc.

It also is good for cleaning and disinfecting purposes. It's very informative. It's called "The Honey, Garlic, Vinegar Miracle".

Diabetes and apple cider vinegar is just one of several subjects that I will be writing about over the next several days which will pertaining to natural herbs and supplements that has a direct affect on the blood sugars of diabetics.
